5 Reasons to Stop Drinking. Based on the Personal Experience

I’ve recently written an article about how I managed to lose a lot of weight in a short time frame of 3 months. I’ve lost 100 pounds and it was a blessing for me. It drastically improved my quality of life.

Today I wanted to talk about another personal subject — drinking. Let’s start with a background and how I got into drinking myself. And then a long way through realizing the long-term effects of drinking.

Background

First of all, I need to say that I was born in a country where drinking was not discouraged but rather promoted through TV, movies, and the culture overall.

That country is Russia. The legal drinking age is 18, but many teenagers start drinking much earlier. I was not an exception as well. I’ve tried the first drink when I was 13 years old. Probably even a little bit earlier, but I cannot say for sure.

Since everyone around is drinking it seems like a logical step for a teenager to be “cool” and get into drinking as well. It was back in the 1990s when control for underage drinking was almost non-existent. Nowadays it’s a little bit different.

Either way, the main point is that drinking became a norm to me. Sometimes it was just a bottle of beer a week, sometimes a bottle of wine in a few days. But my body was “trained” to alcohol effects back in childhood.

This habit continued on and off up until the age of 20. I’ve talked to a doctor and he told me that I would eventually end up dead if I keep drinking. Not only because of the harmful impact alcohol had on my body, but also because I was gaining way too much weight.

As you can see that I was drinking heavily up until the age of 20. I moved to the United States at around that time and I was thinking this way:

Legally, people in the US start drinking at 21. But I was already ending it at 21. I’ve realized that I can’t make alcohol control my life anymore. Lesson learned.

Here are the reasons why I stopped drinking and only do it occasionally and in controlled portions.

Reason #1. I can finally Focus

Typically when you start drinking your focus is impacted for at least a day. You feel tired, unmotivated and instead of starting a new project or a gig — you don’t feel like it.

You start to think about why you feel this way, but it’s hard to find a culprit. It might take several hours until you feel like yourself.

And if you drink several days in a row — your focus is always impacted. Not a good state of mind, I should say.

Reason #2. It helped me Lose Weight

Trying to lose weight while drinking is like watching TV and believing whatever the media says. Your metabolism is severely slowed down when you drink.

You might get some results in your weight loss battle, but cutting down on the alcohol will definitely speed up your efforts. Help your body fight the excessive carbs. Why not?

Reason #3. Resolving Health Issues

That might be an obvious reason, but frequently we keep thinking that drinking will probably not expose us to any health issues. Why? Because we are lucky.

Well, this is not rocket science, but heavy drinking eventually will cause problems. I can speak from my experience. If you are a guy, your prostate will be glad that you understood the risks and realize the troubles it can cause down the road. Ask your doctor about it.

Reason #4. Resolving Social issues

It’s quite common to see social drinking. And it’s even advertised in our society in many ways that drinking is OK.

However, if you are a person who cuts down on alcohol and able to avoid that, then many people will think of you as a person that has the will and power to change things around them. One way or another, but you will get respect from people around you.

There is even more. People might follow you in that movement. You might inspire them in a good way.

Reason #5. It made me a Better Person

How to summarize it all?

Easy. If you control one area of your life, most likely you can change the other area of your life as well. It’s like a chain of events that lead you to a better self.

Summary

Drinking alcohol was and will always be a part of our society. You cannot change everyone and you cannot stop someone from that harmful behavior.

However, you can change yourself and be a good example for everyone else around you. You can radiate those vibes and make other people aware of how it allowed you to be a better person.

I’ve even tried completely eliminating alcohol from my life for 8 months. Not a single drop of alcohol. It helped me lose weight and improve my health.

Those days, I drink occasionally and limit myself to just one or two glasses of wine, for the most part. I try to avoid beer as much as I can. I am thinking about eliminating alcohol completely, but I feel like I have it under control now.

I have alcohol consumption under my control. Not the other way around.
